Why a Rock Chip Turns Into a Long Crack in Mobile's Heat
A chip is a stress riser: a small notch where force that used to spread across a whole pane suddenly piles into one point. That is the entire mechanism behind a crack that appears overnight with nobody near the car.
Laminated glass is a sandwich, two layers of glass with a plastic interlayer between them. The three layers expand and contract at different rates as the temperature moves. Night is the other half of the cycle. Glass that spent the afternoon at griddle temperature keeps shedding heat for hours after sunset.
